Education in Nicaragua is one of the new ucalgarycares programs launched in the 2013-2014 academic year. In collaboration with residence services, a team of UCalgary students and staff travelled to Managua, Nicaragua to study different facets of education while in a cross-cultural, immersion experience. Students explored the relations and connections between poverty, place, resources and education in an urban setting as well as in the surrounding rural communities. These themes were explored alongside community teachers and other leaders as the group volunteers with Canadian organization, SchoolBOX, to assist local contractors in the construction of a school in the Primavera community of Managua.
In the pre-service workshops leading up to the project, the team discussed cross-cultural awareness, learn about ethical international service-learning, and even had the chance to take some free Spanish language lessons.
