The Homelessness at Home program has been a component of the ucalgarycares Reading week program in partnership with the Mustard Seed since 2010. Each year the program has provided students the opportunity to learn about homelessness in Calgary through volunteering and experiential learning opportunities such as ‘a day in the life’ and ‘night tours’.
Homelessness and mental health was the primary focus of the 2014 Homelessness at Home program. This program engaged over 20 enthusiastic students from all years of study in a four day immersion experience over the February Reading Week. Students heard from guest speakers, including Wellness Centre staff, to learn about mental health and how mental health can affect and be affected by homelessness. Students also got the chance to learn about and engage with different local services available for people who are homeless.
