Food & Justice in New Orleans

Building on the success of the 2011 and 2012 New Orleans programs the CCEL is excited to offer two New Orleans programs for the 2013 Reading Week. The Food & Justice and Building Community programs will have some shared programming as students learn together about the dynamic city of New Orleans.
The Food & Justice program will explore food security as students volunteer with a local urban agriculture project. This experience will allow students to explore the issue of food security and gain appreciations for the social justice issues related to food security such as race, environment, education and poverty. In gaining deeper understanding of these issues students will develop an understanding of the long term effects of social injustice in a community, as well as the impacts of environmental disasters like Hurricane Katrina.
