As one of two New Orleans Reading Week programs in 2013 the Building Community in New Orleans will provide students with the opportunity to learn about the multifaceted issues facing New Orleans post-Hurricane Katrina. Students will volunteer with local organization focused on rebuilding homes, while developing understanding about what makes a community. Students will critically explore the connections between rebuilding homes and a community’s social justice issues like race, environment, poverty, education and policy.
The Food & Justice and Building Community programs are built from the success of the 2011 and 2012 New Orleans programs, and will have some shared programming as students live and learn in the city of New Orleans.
