ucalgarycares (formerly Calgary Serves) refers to a series of co-curricular service-learning programs for University of Calgary students who seek to get involved with communities at the local, national, or international levels.
We offer a variety of programs in which students complete volunteer projects and participate in learning activities (workshops, readings, discussions) in order to reach a more complex understanding of the issue at hand. ucalgarycares encourages students to synthesize and draw connections between their ucalgarycares experiences and course material in order to reach a higher level of understanding, and apply new knowledge.
These experiences are open to students in all programs and years of study. Participants bring their own experiences and knowledge to the interdisciplinary project work. Although these are ‘elective’ programs for students, participating in most ucalgarycares programs is documented on the Co-Curricular Record (CCR). Our aim is that students who participate in ucalgarycares projects will also demonstrate an enhanced civic consciousness.
