ucalgarycares  Reading Week programs have been offered to students through the Community Engagement (formerly the Centre for Community-Engaged Learning) since 2009. They are unique experiences in a student’s academic and university career. Through these immersion experiences, students volunteer in a community at home or elsewhere in North America while learning about a specific issue in our world today, such as social determinants of health in New Orleans, global citizenship in Toronto or sustainability in a technological society in Calgary.

No two ucalgarycares programs are the same, but they are powerful leadership opportunities. Students generally live together, eat together, volunteer together, and learn together during these immersion programs. ucalgarycares team members are selected for their enthusiasm, open attitude, and willingness to work in a team.

While ucalgarycares Reading Week programs take place in February, teams meet monthly for pre-service workshops and team-building activities and to discuss films or readings related to their ucalgarycares program.

ucalgarycares Spring and Summer programs (formerly Calgary Serves International) programs provide students service-learning in a cross-cultural context. In these co-curricular programs students travel, learn and serve together in different international communities.  ucalgarycares Spring and Summer programs have been offered to students through Community Engagement since 2010. ucalgarycares Spring and Summer programs explore leadership and social justice through global perspectives and challenge participant’s ideas of privilege and ethical international engagement. Students have the opportunity to learn about community development in Costa Rica or explore indigenous leadership and ways of knowing in the Yukon.

ucalgarycares Spring and Summer programs are powerful leadership and development opportunities. Team members are selected for their enthusiasm, open attitude, and willingness to work in a team.

Monthly pre-service workshops prior to the Spring Term and Summer term programs make the ucalgarycares experience a rich learning opportunity. These monthly pre-service workshops are a place for team-building activities, discussions on films or readings related to the project, and language lessons where needed. While specific language skills are not required for the program, eagerness to learn is an asset.
