Students get Ready to Volunteer as Reading Week Approaches

UCalgary students are packing their bags as we speak in preparation for their service-learning Reading Week adventures!

The 2013-2014 academic year brings four new programs through the Centre for Community-Engaged Learning. On top of our usual programs, we are happy to re-introduce the Youth by Youth: Digital Storytelling Project this Reading Week, and you can also look forward to hearing from students traveling to Nicaragua, Namibia, and the Arctic this Spring and Summer Terms.

This Reading Week, February 17-21, 54 students will be participating in the following ucalgarycares programs:

  • Homelessness at Home, in collaboration with the Mustard Seed, students will be focusing on homelessness and mental health
  • Youth by Youth:Digital Storytelling, in partnership with Antyx Community Arts and the United Way, students and community youth will create multimedia stories
  • Food & Justice, students will volunteer with different urban agriculture organizations in New Orleans to study various factors of food (in)justice
  • Building Healthy Communities, students will spend reading week volunteering with Habitat for Humanity New Orleans and focus on different facets of community

Look for more posts to come over the next two weeks as students reflect on their experiences.
