Our ucalgarycares program in Chira Island is never complete without a trip to the artisans’ cooperative in Jicaro. This cooperative (like La Amistad cabins and like the Pianguas association) started in the year 2000. Making necklaces and bracelets out of seeds from the local area, as well as carvings in the jicara fruit, these women supplement their family’s income. Most of their husbands (if they are married) fish for a living, but fish stocks are being depleted.
The women involved with the cooperative taught many of our group members how to make their own bracelet out of beautiful local seeds such as Lagrimas de San Pedro or the Guanacaste (the national tree of Costa Rica). Unlike souvenirs bought in San Jose, we are directly supporting the artisans.
