A Brush with Kindness

Brushed With Kindness, 7th Ward, New OrleansToday the ucalgarycares Building Community team finished work on a home in the 7th ward. The team felt a strong connection with the homeowner, and the finished product looks great. Brushed With Kindness is a Habitat for Humanity New Orleans program to address urban blight, and continue to improve homes that have suffered hurricane damage from Katrina and Isaac. The program provides qualifying homeowners with an affordable (subsidized) opportunity to have exterior work done on their homes (often replacement of siding, repainting, repairs to porches etc). The homeowner puts in 8 hours of ‘sweat equity’ at their own house, at the HFH office, or the HFH ReStore, and pays between $50-$200 for the repairs, while HFH subsidizes the rest and provides volunteer labour like ours!
