Me llamo Justine Gosselin, I’m a second year business student at U of C and I’m really looking forward to the Calgary Serves International program on Chira Island this spring.
It doesn’t seem like that long ago that the group first met up at the first pre-service meeting, and yet we’re already leaving in 3 days time. I can’t wait to get to know this group better and meet my host family, this will be a truly enriching experience and I’m so looking forward to it.
Although I have learnt both spanish and french my greatest fear and possibly challenge would have to be the language barrier, but this will give me an opportunity to brush up on my spanish skills, and learn many new things not only from my host family and the Calgary Serves group itself but from the entire community.
I’m really looking forward to meeting my host family, and the people of Chira Island, and getting involved in the community. Without a doubt there will be some challenges due to culture shock, the language barrier, and of course some of the emotional and physical wears this program will bring about, but these can only bring growth and be useful lessons for years to come.
Overall I’m super excited and a little bit nervous about this experience, but know it will be extremely worthwhile and unforgettable.
Lastly I’d like to thank Erin and Amy for putting together this group, and organizing everything from the pre-service meetings to little trip details, on that note I’d also like to thank VIDA and the other groups involved in the host family matchings. As well I’d like to thank Shell, the Student’s Union and all my family and friends who’ve all donated to this program, it really means a lot to me.
With that said I should really get on packing, and will keep updating this page about what promises to be an amazing experience.
